My thought of the day
So i will try to make it up to, although i am not sure how.
Anyway today was a Doctor Who speacial - i like doctor who, i am a fan of sci-fi.
It was presented as if it was going to be the scarest doctor who yet, it wasn't. If you haven't seen it i recommend an episode called blink. It builds the tension though out really well and does scary the hell out of you. Anyway my point of this post is not too go on and on about doctor who.
See during the rest of the day i did the ironing for my mother, and watched another show i love.
Battlestar Gallactica - is an amazing American Sci-fi Drama and it is miles in front of doctor who.
American Entertainment tv seems so much ahead and it is. They're writers aren't being driven by money as much as they are entertainment and good writing. I am not saying there are not talented writers in britain i am just saying maybe they are not being pushed to their full potential. If Doctor who wasn't being played to maxium cheese factor it would be a much stronger programme, if it was made with more grit and dark i surpose it wouldn't be as family friendly but at least it wouldn't be like a panto at times.
Maybe if we we where more engaging it would be better, or if the compertion increased for staurday night tv so the bbc would have to up it's game so they don't just have three and four to compete with.
Anyway I still love Sci-fi, and i hope that TV drama just keeps getting beter.

Sustainability Forum (includes my thought of the day)

Dr Keith Skene and Vivien Collie, I enjoyed both of their talks and they did both make me think.
The main topic tonight was food Sustainability. I admit though I had already done a small amount of research on this myself, not that I wasn't educated tonight. I just already understood a few of the issues that where discussed. This might be because I love food, I love to cook and I love to watching cooking shows, another reason is for my slight understanding might be my summer project where I chose to do it on water which inevitable lead on to food. There is also the factor that I am in a relationship with someone studying conservation, in which he constantly explains things to me.
Anyway the fact that we are running out of food due to the growing population and with that less energy that is needed to over come our future problem. Eating less meat was one suggestion, it is something I personally might struggle with, I love vegetarian options, but I also love meat and am not sure how much I could take of a reduction of a food group I crave for. Anything I "crave for" is children, which was another thing Dr Skene suggested we reduce the amount of by having one each, although he wasn't sure if that would work, personally i think you need siblings as a strong foothold in reality, it gives you more time to develop social skills and the fact that my brother has easily with no question shaped who I am make me think and wonder how we can change the way our family unit is, although I guess it is changing by it's self anyway.
Vivien Collie hit different issues that still held my interest her idea of community and local produces is something my own father encourages. She talked about how she set up a farmers market in a couple of place in fife, one of which is my home town. i have been to this farmers market, I personally love them but I can not afford them. I wish I had the money to support local farmers but I do seem to feed the giants of food. She has been to the place I work Cairnie Fruit Farm, and looked at other local produce I have grown up with a known about. Another thing is the idea of the big four supermarkets that monopolising the market. One of the things that people who are from Cupar say is that it is just charity shops and estate agencies, Tesco killed the local economy and admittedly. some of our most unique shops lost so much business to tesco and now they are gone. Although the town councils have finally taken a positive step, Tesco's brought an area of land next to their current site in Cupar and they planned to turn it into a Tesco's Extra, the town council said they had to reduces their non food goods in ratio to their food goods to go ahead with they plans so as not to damage the community economy (anymore).
So after the event I have decided to avoid Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons, I will only buy food when I need it unless it is something that will into go out of date and I will try to plan my week. As well as eating more Vegetables and less meat. I do need to lose weight (I'm not being a silly girl here i am overweight according to the doctor) and there is nothing wrong with trying to better my health. Anyway I put to you to try it with me, buy what you need as you go, plan for the week ahead, eat less meat and think about trying to put your money in smaller business pockets.

Thought for they day 10/11/09
But instead of me getting into the basics of political campaign and manipulation of the media. My point is simply -
Why is it that the idea of removing child poverty has just been presented as a new policy to me? I know it is not but I feel appalled that it isn't something that is among the top problems of the country considering the current state of the coutry.

Nick Griffin

I Disagree with this man completely and like a fairly large amount of British citizens I am not completely British, or what ever he classifies it. Honestly I find him absurd and a complete ignorant idiot. Usually I would feel the need to back myself up but today I don't and it is not the point I want to make. Everything that has been said about him has been said, I know what I think about him and what he stands for and I don't feel the need to voices it any more than anyone else. I don't understand anyone that would vote for him but please if you would explain to me why, i would also like to invite you to look thought friends and think how nay of them come under the bubble of indigenous to the British isles, then re-read the BNP policy and past policy's.
Firstly I have only just watched question time. I was busy when it first aired and did not get a chance to view it till now. So I have read the fall out before I saw the cause, I have seen the reaction to an event that I had not seen. So instead of watching it with a closed mind and complete hatred of Nick Griffin I sat down and watched on I player (brilliant thing by the way, watching TV on-line) and think the BBC appear to handled this poorly and not just poorly, incredibly poorly. You may have noticed though out the programme there was uproar if clapping to anyone that attacked, yes I am going to use that, attacked Mr Griffin. Now watch the last few minutes the last quarter and you notice and less negative responses. People and begin to simplified although i am glad to not too a huge amount.
He does have a right to stage his views as i have my right to stage my views about him and who ever reads this has there right to stage there views on what i have written. The thing that is annoying me the most is that fact that Nick Griffin has been on the BBC before serial times, on political and relevant programmes and has again expressed view that most British people disagree with. The main reason that no one reacted was because the media did not report on it, and then the media whips up a frenzy on question time and i fail to see the difference between that and newsnight or andrew marr.
If Griffin had been ignored and just left to say what he feels the need to say with out the "lynch mob" and media uproar, i would think the events would go past with little impact but now he has been given a stage to sympathetic ears. People with more right wings views and maybe a little more open to him. In this climate when Labours chances are minimal and trust for the torries isn't as high as you might think the BNP seats increase and that is what scares me. I would like to me a plea to you know please vote, let the government know what you want or those who vote BNP might get there way.
Unlikely though.

Don't try to manipulate me
What I do object to is the way Television tries it. I can see what they are doing and most of time it really annoys me, but what worries me is the times I don't notice it. I would like to know how much I have been brain washed by the media's point of view, still I quiet often yell at the news I am guessing not so much but it worries me.
For example the way the got Tony Blair out I know it was a combination of the two media's but the television had a lot more influence on that than you would. I know it is just theory I can not give you any proof of the top of my head but watch the news and see it for Gordon brown this time round. David Cameron is being shown in a very good light in comparison even though the Torrie are refusing to tell us exactly what there policy are they are being presented as the next party to take power in Westminster.
I would like to use this to reflect on how the media does control the masses, I would love to sit here and say I rebel against it but I honestly have no clue if I am or not but if conservatives get in I feel they have had a clear hand from the media playing up policy that they have presented rather than question how well the work.
Any way just another opinionated rant, i thought i would have a little change for my next blog but we'll see when that happens.

I do go on
I like that idea. How would you go about that legally? I don’t mean some message book in every City; no one looks back in them not really. I want my presents to be seen on a big wall, legally preferably. What if you had your photo taken at each airport and each airport had a wall that they put that picture up. Imagine if you where in an airport waiting for a plane and you looked at this wall and saw someone’s face that you know. Would you stand there and think “small world,” which is part of the point I am trying to make and I will get there soon.
So in having a few places here and there that to me have important links to my past, present or future, doesn’t mean that I would have any problem with someone from some far off place becoming part of that world.
As a young woman who wishes to live aboard for a short amount of time. I would like to know if the same people that have a problem with those who come here looking for work, an escape or just a new start have a problem with me going to someone else’s country and taking someone else’s job and money. I want to know if that same person who says that they should all be kicked out would mine me going to their country and living there for a while, or if they might get that I just want to experience the world.
I know I might be going for different reasons but really how hard is it to share. I know there are only so many jobs, room, food, water and energy but why must we place such strong controls over our border, after all it is only a small world and sometimes one corner of that world is hideous and evil. Why can’t we just let them out? It is so hard to share? It is so easy to be selfish in today’s climate, but I wish people would remember how lucky we are as a country. I wish people could see how our world might be a bit brilliant if you let in cultures you don’t know and you embrace it rather than reject change.
But hey we don’t like change.
I however seem to wish to live in a utopia, which is not always a bad thing.

Hel-what-tica

Helvetica is very well known typeface that I had never heard of till about a week ago. Then I got an e-mail followed by an announcement, asking for graphic design students to attend the showing at the DCA. That day was however my birthday and I felt a tad resentful at the thought of this on my birthday but soon told myself to get over it that is life after all. So after making the decision I paid my £3 pounds and put down my name thinking I would be educated in some shape or form yet I was not sure how.
Sitting there I was thinking about what would be said and personally didn't think that much could be said about a font, I was right. The film was interesting but I thought it contained a few over baring opinions. Now I feel over educated in those opinions of it from the film. My main confusion was the point in it. To some of those featured it just seemed like a place to vent the hatred for the blanned simplistic of Helvetica. For others it seemed like a way to worship Max Miedinger for his timeless design. There seem to be no conclusive decision by the end. The designer felt their own way about Helvetica at the start and all felt the same by the end.
The history of how graphic design developed was enjoyable, the order and crisp deigns that came straight after Helvetica was born to the rebels after that period determined not to use the plane Jane option. That stood out to me, I know I would have rebelled if I were there; I would do anything to be different from what everyone else had done and how they had done it. The idea of an individual still amuses me, and all these design were running so far from what appeared to make them blanned, boring and uncreative that it was what eventually united them again. These individual creative minds were all avoiding Helvetica so as to be original but coming up with the same messy designs. It was like that for my friend and myself at school, "moshers", "Goths" and "punks" all dressing to be different yet all dressing to fit in with each other to not be the normal boring kid and so as not to not fit in everywhere.
There is a reason good things repeat themselves like Helvetica it is because it seems to be a good thing, all though I only feel completely indifferent towards it I do feel now more aware. At first I felt disgust at it's over use and the corrupt aside of it, yet the ironic idea of using it out of content. I have found myself glancing around and not really being able to see much else. It is like a comfort zone almost, it is just Helvetica that doesn't need to tell you anything other than what is written. It might not fit but at the same time it doesn't clash. looking around to this boring but this simple and clean font I still just see what I am suppose to, a sign and a point of being readable from a distance and making the point that it doesn't need to be that fancy new times roman or Georgia. Although it is a blank canvas and completely boring, it does do what fonts are suppose to do. Communicates in the simplest way possible, though shapes that with other shapes together make sense.
I am not sure if I will use it part of right now seems to think the commercial side of the font has indeed put me off that idea and the other part makes me think it would be like a double bluff and if used correctly could be quiet clever. All I know is it is staying and I am still completely in different.

Once explained that we would all be given a martial to study and have to just look at it from all directions, i did feel a little stumped. As i pulled Cloth out of the "lucky dip" and read out my martial i felt sure i would not get far, 'cloth' was printed neatly on to this small cut up pices of paper. My mind just difted to dish cloths althoug i have no idea why. Soon to folow was the idea of the loin cloth,
Jungle Book
Tarzan
although a bit off track it was all a bit of fun.
Anyway feeling a need for a new direction i looked up the dictionary definition of 'cloth'.
And something came up,
1. | a fabric formed by weaving, felting, etc., from wool, hair, silk, flax, cotton, or other fiber, used for garments, upholstery, and many other items. |
2. | a piece of such a fabric for a particular purpose: an altar cloth. |
3. | the particular attire of any profession, esp. that of the clergy. Compare man of the cloth . |
4. | the cloth, the clergy: men of the cloth. |
The Religious imagery and the idea spun out of my head as i looked to The Clergy and then Genesis. With those who were clothed first Adam and Eve.
Fig leaves are now swarming my head and i am wating for is for what comes next, and how will i make this work.
